The People`s Palace is a popular place for grandparents to bring their grandchildren to see how previous generations lived in the city as the collections bring together many displays which portray Glasgow life and culture over the centuries. The displays include material on subjects such as: immigrants, the Glasgow "patter" (dialect), the temperance movement, the world wars, the "steamie" (communal wash-house), local politics, manufacturing and trading, Glasgow Fair, housing, sport ... and lots more! Glasgow`s council started many enterprises for the benefit of its citizens and this lampstandard was erected by the Glasgow Corporation Lighting Department in 1902. It now stands outside the People`s Palace. |
