This statue stands in Elder Park in Govan. Isabella Elder (1828-1905) was the wife of John Elder the shipbuilder.

After he died in 1869, Isabella used his substantial fortune for the benefit of the people of Govan and Glasgow. As well as donating Elder Park, the Elder Library and a local hospital, she made provision for professorial chairs of civil engineering and naval architecture at Glasgow University and provided a building for Queen Margaret College.

This article is based on the guidebook "The Glasgow Guide".

Through her gifts, Isabella Elder became one of the best-known women in Glasgow`s history.
